![]() What to do when bill collectors call If you are contacted by collection agency representatives, its important to know how to work with them. Your first step, after you have been contacted, is to call or write the collection agency as soon as possible, whether or not you owe the debt. You have legal rights, but there are time limitations within which you have to exercise them. If you ignore the problem, you could end up with a court judgment against you for the full amount, whether you owe it or not. If you owe all of, or at least part of what is demanded, you should negotiate a settlement. You may be able to work out a reasonable payment plan. You may also be able to negotiate and have the company drop finance charges, collection charges, or other charges if you pay in full by a certain date. If you come to an agreement with the collection agency, its best to get it in writing. If you don’t owe the debt, send a copy of a receipt proving it has already been paid. Be candid and truthful and explain what you know concerning the situation to the collection agency.
